Setting the Table: Food for Thought is a Youth Art Saturday School (YASS) three-week workshop created to form connections and explore one's cultural identity inspired by shared food and experience. Children grades 3rd-5th will explore The Chrysler Museum's current exhibition Farm to Table: Art, Food, and Identity in the Age of Impressionism as well as paintings from their permanent collection. Further, playful museum activities will help students engage with the museum’s collection. Ultimately, along with daily warmups, students will create their own abstract and representational paintings. They will experiment independently and collaboratively to create these meaningful works of art. These exercises will encourage students to explore their own identity, culture, and exercise inclusivity over the course of three Saturdays, each from 10am to 1pm: October 19th, October 26th, and November 2nd. Signup includes all three days, as each lesson builds on the prior days and ultimately leads to a final display of student work! YASS 2024 at the Chrysler is taught by preservice teachers from the ODU Art Education department as they prepare for their future teaching careers. Don’t miss out on this opportunity for children to nurture their creativity and grow as artists!

Setting the Table: Food for Thought is presented by ODU Art Education seniors, Artist Ojeriakhi, Isabella Thompson, and Rachel Vredenburg.

By registering for YASS, you agree to commit for all three classes. Each class builds on the knowledge of the previous one, so attendance is important. You only need to purchase one ticket to reserve your child's seat for all three classes.

This unique program is designed to inspire young artists in Middle and High School to explore their creativity while connecting with the beauty of nature. Students will view the stunning landscapes of the Hermitage Gardens as we walk through the serene pathways. Each session includes guided exploration, encouraging students to observe and appreciate the natural world around them. We will take a step back in time with a tour of the historic Hermitage Museum and discover a diverse collection of art from cultures around the world, sparking ideas and broadening inspiration. Students will also dive into a variety of illuminating art processes! Participants will learn the fundamentals of observational drawing, capturing the beauty of their surroundings through sketching techniques. Additionally, they’ll have the chance to create stunning faux stained glass, transforming ordinary materials into vibrant works of art that reflect light.      Inspired by the Virginia MOCA’s exhibits ART OF THE VIBE 4, an exhibition of 7 local ViBE District artists, and Made in VA, comes What’s the Vibe?; a three Saturday YASS (Youth Art Saturday School) program and an exciting opportunity for ages 12-18 to dream up a work of art unique to each artist’s vibe and tie to their community! This workshop tasks local artists to investigate who they are as individuals, and in their community at large. Showcasing the exhibiting works of Kerri Caldwell, Jenny Craddock, Tessa Hall Duquette and more, students will question what it means and looks like to be a part of something bigger than themselves, whether through activism, color, or noteworthy imagery. Each participant will have the opportunity to explore MOCA’s latest exhibits, practice their drawing skills in a self-portrait, create a design that depicts their community connections, and collaborate in a larger work.  Artists will turn the individual works into their very own agamograph; an art form that uses optical illusion to alter what the viewer sees. We hope you come out to create and be inspired by, and inspire, fellow local artists.

What's The Vibe? is presented by ODU Art education seniors, Giovann Collazo and Sophia Davis.
