Located at the Chrysler Museum of Art, this Saturday Morning Art Class explores the meaning of art for activism. The history of using art as a means of protest will be investigated.  Kehinde Wiley, and artists whose work is presented outside of the Chrysler, mostly activist artists, will be explored. As young people with fresh thoughts and opinions on the world, the students will be challenged to investigate themselves and what they believe in. How do they see the world? How do they want the world to see themselves? Art will be used as a tool of expression. The students will get the chance to form and create their own voice through the use of fiber arts, an exciting and diverse media. A Call for Craftivists will give students the perfect combination of fiber art-making and self-expressionism. Come make art and be the start of change!

For the safety of the community, all attendees are required to were a facemask, regardless of vaccination status.

10:00am-1:00pm

Ages 3rd-5th grade

Everyone of all ages loves to tell or share stories, fictional or realistic. Storytelling helps us communicate and share our ideas with one another. It teaches awareness, purpose, and appeals to the emotions of the storyteller and the audience. Many artists tell stories visually through their artwork.

3rd through 5th grade students enrolled in these Saturday Morning Art Classes will be introduced to folk art and storytelling through art making. Students will explore the Chrysler Museum of Art and learn about artists such as Nick Cave and Nam June Paik. Both artists work with a variety of media just like the students will in these classes.

Students will create their own stories and develop characters through storyboarding, mixed media art making, and sewing their own character from their story. The Art of Storytelling will encourage students to dive into the topics of their own choosing and discuss prejudice (don’t judge a book by its cover!) when writing their stories and creating their works of art together.

For the safety of the community, all attendees are required to were a facemask, regardless of vaccination status.

Explore the beautiful Hermitage Museum and Gardens in this environmental art workshop that focuses on the importance of environmentalism and preserving nature. “Imprinting Nature” is a Saturday morning art workshop that will allow students to learn about the significance of the environment around the Hermitage grounds, gain invaluable experience with a variety of art making processes, and produce an appreciation and love for nature. The importance of creating a safe and clean habitat for species of fish and wildlife, as well as sustaining a healthy ecosystem will be explored as students connect with nature through the processes of papermaking, photography, and printmaking. As we transmit the natural beauty of the Hermitage grounds into art we are simultaneously encouraging each other to actively take care of our environment. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced young artist, come learn about the importance of environmentalism and create some beautiful art with us in this nature-inspired art workshop!
