Join ODU art education students for Reflective Realities!
This three-day workshop is presented by Kaya Mensah and Makayla Burgess in partnership with the Chrysler Museum of Art. Focusing on the theme of reflection and perception, this program invites students to explore how artists use mirrors, light, and repetition to create meaningful art and experiences. Drawing inspiration from various contemporary artists, such as Olafur Eliasson who is known for his playful glass installations that bend light and explore perspective, students will learn about the ways that reflections can shape our reality. Additional contemporary works of art will be investigated to spark curiosity and discussion. Over the course of three-days students will experiment with a variety of hands-on processes by creating a kaleidoscope, designing a decorative mirror, and exploring printmaking techniques that play with mirror images. By the end of the sessions, students will take three unique works of art inspired by their investigations into the museum collections, while reflecting on art with their newly found perspectives.
Reflective Realities is presented by ODU Art Education seniors, Kaya Mensah and Makayla Burgess

Are you ready to see yourself and nature in a new light? Join ODU Art Education Pre-Service Teachers, Madelyn McCarthy and Camille Brown, at the Hermitage Museum and Gardens for a fun and engaging Youth Art Saturday School (Y.A.S.S.) workshop, Nature in Focus. This program invites middle school and high school students to explore how identity, storytelling, and the natural world can come together through art.
Students will begin their journey with a guided walk through the Hermitage Museum and gardens to gather inspiration from the lush landscapes, plants, and textures surrounding the museum. Inside the galleries, students will discover the history of the Hermitage Museum and how the natural landscape and elements of nature inspired its construction. In the studio, students will dive into hands-on artmaking, experimenting with digital photography, collage, and cyanotype printing. Inspired by artist Nellie Appleby, students will layer photographic negatives with found natural objects to create imaginative collages and self-portraits that tell their own stories. By the end of the workshop, students will have a one-of-a-kind cyanotype collage to take home, an artwork that blends their personal identity with the beauty of nature.
Nature in Focus is presented by ODU Art education seniors, Madelyn Mcarthy and Camille Brown
